HARTFORD — Residents got a chance Thursday night to discuss the annual budget with the Board of Selectmen and the Budget Committee.

It will be voted on at the annual town meeting at 6 p.m. June 10 at the Town Hall.

Residents were told by Budget Committee Chairman Dan Maddox that this year’s budget is 3.9 percent lower than last year’s. One reason is a reduction in winter roads spending.

Lee Holman, chairwoman of the Board of Selectmen, said due to the mild winter, the sand and salt shed is full.

The snow plow bids were also lower.

An error was discovered in Article 14, which stated the money to be raised through taxation for legal fees was $4,150. It should have been $2,550.

A higher figure in the Revaluation Reserve Account was explained as bringing the reserve account back to a former level. No money had been appropriated last year that has usually run $9,500 per year.

A $614 sum for the garage account was explained by Maddox. He said they were doing repairs that should have already been done.

The cemetery budget was up $345 due mostly to trees that needed to come down,  according to Selectman Jack Plumley.

Resident Arthur Harvey raised a question about how the Board of Selectman and the Budget Committee together could have the authority to approve expenditures from the Contingency Fund. He questioned what would represent a quorum.

Holman said it was a good question and she would ask an official at the Maine Municipal Association.

An article asking voters to authorize selectmen to pursue acquisition of title to Thompson Yard, Fuller and Sparrow cemeteries is proposed.

Cemetery Committee member Beverly Murphy asked why not take them all.

Holman replied that the three listed had open spaces that the town could sell and it was expensive to research titles to the cemeteries.

Voters will elect a selectman and a town clerk on Tuesday, June 8. Polls will open at 10 a.m. and close at 8 p.m.

Selectman Zoe Cowett and Town Clerk Lianne Bedard are running unopposed.
