SOUTH PARIS – Herbert J. “Harky” Holt, 90, formerly of Rumford, died Friday, June 4, at the Maine Veterans Home in South Paris.

He was born in Rumford on Feb. 28, 1920, the son of Carroll and Imelda (McNeil) Holt, Sr. and graduated from Stephen’s High School in Rumford.

During World War II he served as a Pfc. with the U.S. Army Fourth Signal Company including overseas in Central Europe, Rhineland and the Ardennes. He received the Bronze Star for his part laying in communications wire at the Remagen bridge.

Harky owned and operated his own dump truck and hauled for many local contractors, before he worked as a plumber for R.L. Clarke and Glen Swan Plumbing Contractors and then he worked as a piper for many years, until retirement from the Boise Cascade Paper Company in Rumford. He and his wife and family spent many memorable summers at their camp at Webb Lake.

He was married in Weld on Aug. 8, 1952 to Catherine Stratton Holman, who died in Rumford, Jan. 19, 2002.

Survivors include stepsons, William S. Holman and wife, Paulette, of East Grand Forks, Minn. and Irving P. Holman of West Haven, Conn.; many step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; a sister, Geraldine Quinn of Connecticut; and a brother, John “Jack” Holt of West Peru.

He was predeceased by brothers, Bill and Thomas Holt; sister, Frances Rasmussen; and a stepson, Ray Holman.
