Lewiston will hire a testing firm to identify asbestos that must be removed from the former Coca-Cola bottling plant on Park Street so that it can be torn down to make way for the city’s new police station.
The Lewiston Finance Committee voted Monday to allow Purchasing Agent Norman J. Beauparlant to negotiate with Northeast Test Consultants on a contract to hire the firm to locate asbestos in the Coke building.
Beauparlant said initial surveys have indicated substantial amounts of the substance. He said Northeast is needed to identify where asbestos was used so it may be safely removed before the building is demolished.
