DEAR SUN SPOTS: In response to the recent inquiry about Cooper’s, it was one room-with-attached kitchen, near enough to walk to from Bates during my student years there from 1951 to 1955.

A hamburger, fries, and a chocolate milk shake cost 46 cents, and the whole dorm could tell you’d been to Cooper’s because you smelled like hot oil when you got back! Their food was simple and good to taste though probably not good for one’s cholesterol.

By the 1960s they had expanded and had a “real” dining room; our family would go there for supper occasionally and enjoy their good, inexpensive, food. By then it was purple, I believe.

The family that ran it was very involved with Lewiston hockey, I think. One of the patriarchs may have played with the old Bates Manufacturing team that played in the St. Dom’s arena where you stood on the bleachers to watch the game. — No Name via e-mail

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Just a quick response to the question of when Cooper’s closed and the building torn down. The business closed on Sunday, May 2, 1999, and the building was torn down to be used as a parking lot by St. Mary’s Hospital in the early spring of 2008.

The business was started in 1945 by the Cooper brothers, Frank and Jim. It was sold in the summer of 1971 to my husband Richard and I. We ran it from that time until its closing.
