100 years ago, 1910

The mayor and aldermen of Lewiston met last evening for a brief session. An order was read by Alderman Lavertu calling for the appropriation of $350 for band concerts to begin the third week in June, $100 to be given to the Brigade, the Dominican and Hobbs Bands and $50 to St. Cecilia Band, each band to give three concerts except the boys band, which will give two. The order was passed.

50 years ago, 1960

The formation of a Downtown Task Force and the appointment of businessman Murray Shultz as its chairman were announced last night by H. L. Gosselin, president of the Lewiston Chamber of Commerce.

The Downtown Task Force’s objective “is to study and recommend a workable, progressive plan to meet the present and future needs of the central business district,” it was reported.

The chamber announcement added that committee members making up the task force will be announced in a few days.

25 years ago 1985

FARMINGTON — An infestation of flies has caused concern among some Franklin County residents.

Franklin County Extension agent Rick Barr said Thursday that two specimens of flies brought to the office would be forwarded to the entomology laboratory at the University of Maine at Orono for examination.

Barr said he wanted the specimens to be positively identified before he makes any recommendations regarding possible health hazards and control.
