MONMOUTH — On Saturday, June 26, the Monmouth Garden Club will offer a tour of a dozen unusual gardens, including an oriental garden; an organic vegetable, flower and herb farm; and a former sheep farm with gardens surrounded by old trees, shrubs, grape vines and roses.
The gardens were selected to offer ideas about water gardening, erosion control, architectural features and sustainable use of plants.
The tour also includes a Hobbit village on the grounds of the former Woolworth estate where tea will be available; and a boat ride to an island garden; a tour of Cumston Hall; and open houses at two 19th century homes.
Lunch, a lobster plate or salad buffet, will be available at an 18th century church vestry.
People taking the garden tour can attend the 7 p.m. Theater of Monmouth performance of Shakespeare’s “Clownes: A Foole’s Guide to Shakespeare,” at a reduced price.
The tour will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine.
Garden tour tickets are $15 in advance ($29 includes lobster plate lunch or $23 for salad buffet) at www.monmouthgardenclub.org, or by cash or check at Longfellow’s Greenhouse in Manchester and DR Struck in Winthrop.
Tickets may also be purchased on the day of the tour: $20 ($34 includes lobster plate lunch or $28 for salad buffet) at Cumston Hall on Main Street, where programs with tour directions will be available.
