CANTON – The committee overseeing efforts to rebuild the dam on Lake Anasagunticook announced a public hearing for Tuesday, June 15, at 6:30 in the Canton Municipal Building.

The Community Development Block Grant Advisory Committee will share information on the proposed dam design, environmental concerns, safety and financial aspects of the project with residents of Canton and Hartford. Representatives of engineering and consulting firms, Androscoggin Valley Council on Governments, the state and the committee will answer questions and take comments from residents.

There will be a cleanup day Saturday, June 19, at the dam site. Residents of Canton and Hartford and other volunteers are encouraged to report to the dam site at 9 a.m. with gloves, tools such as loppers and weed-whackers for cleaning up the site, and garden tools for replanting ornamentals along the stream banks.

Tom Hadley, who has led the beautification of Canton parks, will provide plants, many of them removed from old home sites in the flood plain. Dave Bowen will use a bush -hog to mow the site before June 19. Rock walls in disrepair will be rebuilt.

The committee will furnish hot dogs, drinks and desserts to the volunteers.

The first phase of the Brownfield Assessment has been completed with the report delivered to the towns. This phase consisted primarily of searching records to determine historical uses of the property. Samples have been taken for Phase II which requires analysis of soil samples from the site. The Phase II report is due in July. This information will be used in developing plans for use of the entire property.

Thanks to $500,000 from the CDBG, the Advisory Committee needs only another $135,000 to complete the project. Members of the committee are selling raffle tickets to raise money. The winner of one of the prizes, 4 tickets to a Red Sox game with transportation from Saco, will be determined at a drawing July 25.
