I want to update a letter sent several months ago about organ donors and the gift of life.
My son has waited several years, living on a heart pump, a left ventricular assist device, waiting for a heart. We got the call on May 14 to come to Boston — there was a heart ready for transplant.
No words can describe the feelings we all had on that trip. My son, Gregory, was so excited and scared as we traveled to Boston.
The surgery was on May 15 — the beginning of a new life for him and his loved ones. He has had some bad setbacks but, as of this writing, he is doing well — still in the hospital in Boston.
We thank everyone for the prayers, cards and donations. We did stop often to say a special prayer for the family who made the decision to give the gift of life. We tried to understand what they were going through while we were so happy.
My thanks go to all those who take the time to sign up to become donors. There is no greater gift than the gift of life. My son could say how it feels from his point of view. That might make others want sign up to be donors.
