SOUTH PARIS — It could be said that D.J. Croy made the best of a bad situation.

Croy made up for a botched suicide squeeze attempt by launching a two-run homer and Erik Henderson made it stand up as Oxford Hills shut out Brunswick, 2-0, in an Eastern Class A baseball quarterfinal at the Gouin Athletic Complex Wednesday.

The third-seeded Vikings (15-2) advance to Saturday’s semifinals, where they will meet the winner of Thursday’s quarterfinal between Edward Little and Cony. The sixth-seeded Dragons finish their season at 8-9.

Oxford Hills broke a scoreless tie in the second. Jordan Croteau led off with a double, then went to third when Ethan Davidson reached on a sacrifice bunt attempt. Croteau was thrown out when Croy (two hits) failed to get down a suicide squeeze, but then Croy homered on a 1-2 pitch from Brunswick’s Steven Carter for the 2-0 advantage.

Henderson scattered six hits, walked one and fanned six while going the distance for the Vikings. Brunswick’s best scoring chance came in the fourth. With Garret Erb (two hits) at first, Matt Chart hit a single which took a bad hop past Croy in the outfield. Erb was waived home, but Kyle Farrar cut off Croy’s throw and gunned him down at the plate.

Henderson avoided more trouble until the seventh, when Erb belted a leadoff double. But the senior right-hander got a line out to shortstop and back-to-back Ks to preserve the shutout and improve his record to 5-0 on the season.
