DIXFIELD — Dirigo overcame an early Old Orchard Beach run and poured on the offense in its first inning at the plate in the teams’ Class C quarterfinal game Thursday afternoon at Harlow Park.

Senior Tyler Chiasson’s two-run homer and David Guildford’s RBI-double highlighted a six-run first inning, and the top-seeded Cougars got solid relief from winning pitcher Ben Holmes in a 9-3 triumph over No. 8 Seagulls.

The teams played the game in poor conditions as a steady rain drenched the infield, but graduation activities forced the schools to try their hardest to play the game anyway.

With the win, Dirigo will now host either North Yarmouth Academy or Wiscasset in a semifinal game at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Dirigo’s Ryan Lafleur no-hit Wiscasset 12-0 in the regular-season opener.

“We got contributions from everyone,’’ Dirigo coach Dave Lafleur said. “It was big to score those runs in the first after they had scored. Tyler’s shot really lifted us up, but you can never have enough runs on a day like this.”

With one out, Tyler Gates singled and Chiasson deposited the next pitch onto Nash St. in right-center field. OOB pitcher Brandon Ouellette walked Lafleur, who stole second and scored on Guildford’s smash to the left-center field gap.

Brodie Thompson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and Eric Bolduc and Cliff Turner each scored on wild pitches.

“We did get some timely hits,” Guildford said. “Our offense has been productive all season. OOB had talked about beating us in the newspaper and they had a swagger about them. Our two losses came at home this season, so after they scored first we decided to get going.”

Old Orchard Beach had grabbed the lead when Evan Bujnowski doubled and scored on Connor Rague’s RBI-single. The Seagulls had their chances to add more, but stranded seven runners in the first three innings.

Lafleur started and walked five batters, but induced a ground ball to get out of a bases-loaded jam to end the second. Chiasson stepped on third base before throwing across the diamond for an inning-ending double play.

Holmes came on in the fourth and restored order by retiring the side.

“I was a little nervous coming in,” Holmes said. “This was my first playoff game, but I settled down quickly. The defense was behind me.”

Dirigo scored two runs in the third. Arik Fenstermacher singled, stole second and scored on Turner’s double. Thompson added an RBI-single.

Spencer Ross walked and Gates hit a homer, but both runs were nullified after Gates missed first base.

“That was unfortunate and Tyler felt awful,” Dave Lafleur said. ”But it fired up the team and the defense came through for us. Ryan battled early on and then Ben Holmes came in and did a good job.”

In the fourth, Fenstermacher added an RBI sacrifice fly.

OOB scored single runs in the fifth and seventh innings.

“I’ve coached over 250 games and these were the worst conditions ever,” OOB coach Tom Lachance said. “The first thing is the players’ safety. I’d hate to think a kid had to miss graduation because he was having surgery.”
