NORWAY — The Norway Memorial Library summer reading program, “Dive In…To a Great Book,” will kick off from noon to 2 p.m. Monday, June 14, at the Guy E. Rowe School. Families will be able to register for the reading program, Norway swim program, LOOK program and other children’s summer programs.

Children will be encouraged to explore water-themed activities while their parents complete registration forms.

The reading program is designed to help students maintain their reading skills over the summer vacation. Students who register for the program will read books of their choice and keep track of the books they read. Prizes will be awarded at several reading milestones.

Children who are not yet reading on their own (generally 0- to 6-years-old) can join the “Read to Me” group. These children will be asked to listen to books over the summer to develop their listening skills and help prepare them for learning to read on their own.

Children who are starting to read on their own may do a combination of reading aloud and listening to books being read aloud or on tape or CD.

School-age children may also register for water-themed activity programs at the library to be held on Thursday afternoons June 17 to Aug. 5. The activities are for children entering grades one to six, and will be led by volunteers from the community, including science teacher Cindy Reedy, local historian Charles Longley, art teacher Brittany Brown, musician Kristin Short, fisherman Richard Kimball, science teacher Stacie Hanscom and Parks and Recreation Department Director Deb Partridge.

There will also be a free performance by puppeteer Martha Dana at Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School on July 29; tickets are needed to enter and will be available at the library starting July 1.

Activities will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis, with registration beginning at the kickoff on June 14.
