Cal Thomas’ column on climate science was way off (“Democrats cling to myth of global climate warming,” Sun Journal, June 6). He cites climatedepot.com as the source of his information. But that website receives part of its funding from Exxon-Mobil and has a long track record of distorting climate research.
Meanwhile, the National Academy of Sciences, our country’s preeminent scientific body, just released a comprehensive report on climate change.
Its first chapter states, “A strong, credible body of scientific evidence shows that climate change is occurring, is caused largely by human activities, and poses significant risks for a broad range of human and natural systems.”
Summaries of the reports are available at americasclimatechoices.org. Other scientific organizations, including NASA, agree with this assessment.
Scientific research can inform the debate about whether to address climate change. Unfortunately, too many politicians and opinion columnists let their antipathy toward government regulation cloud their judgment of the science. Further, too many people are using the Internet to access misinformation that comports with their views.
Thomas should step outside the blogosphere and read up on actual science from actual scientists. He might learn something.
