WILTON — Streetlights, a firetruck and settling the municipal budget will highlight the annual town meeting set for 6:30 p.m. Monday at Academy Hill School.

Once again, selectmen will serve a hamburger/hot dog meal starting at 5:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria.

Voters will decide how much money to spend, after selectmen recommended a budget of $2,693,593 and the Finance Committee recommended $2,713,696. The amounts are $68,585 and $48,985 less than this year, respectively. That’s due to an expected $171,000 increase in the Regional School Unit 9 budget.

While town departments have made cuts to help keep the budget and tax rate down, the streetlight committee has tagged potential lights to shut off to reduce the $51,000 budgeted for streetlights last year.

The committee recommends 158 of the town’s 314 streetlights be shut off. Selectmen propose the budget be reduced to $32,900 while the Finance Committee recommends $30,000.

Savings of about $40,000 could be realized through the town waste transfer station, Town Manager Rhonda Irish said. The budgeted amount no longer reflects any costs or fees for trash or recycling by private haulers.

Voters will also decide whether to enter into an agreement with Dixfield to pay half the cost of a firetruck to be stationed at the East Dixfield department. Each town would be responsible for up to $100,000.

Wilton, Dixfield and East Dixfield Fire Dept. officials met last year, applied for a grant which was not received, then started working toward a solution for this year. This month, Dixfield voters accepted their part as long as Wilton also approves it, she said. The loan would be taken this year with a first payment due next year.
