SABATTUS — Work on the second addition to the Klondike Mill has already been started and the wooden part of the foundation will soon be put in place. The position of the structure in the rear of the main building has made it necessary to go into the river for some of the construction and this has been completed. The floor will rest on a series of concrete piers and will support a building three stories in height, bringing it up to the size of the main part. The addition will take practically a month’s work.

Lewiston Fire Lt. Willie R. Mailhot was promoted to captain last night by the Fire Commission.
The 56-year-old veteran firefighter fills a vacancy caused by the recent retirement of Capt. Eugene Beaudoin.
Mailhot joined the Lewiston department in February 1938. He was promoted to lieutenant in April 1947 and has been assigned as officer in charge of Engine One at Central Fire Station. He remains at the same station with the promotion.

Although sales have dropped slightly, officials of Whiterock Distilleries of Lewiston are optimistic that a 3-month-old decision stripping special discounts from the maker of gin, vodka and sloe gin, won’t harm the company in the long run.
Whiterock lost its preferential pricing status — which gave it a 10 to 12 percent lower retail price in state liquor stores — last March after a Massachusetts competitor challenged a Maine law that gave in-state producers special discounts. Whiterock is Maine’s only liquor producer.
