NORWAY — Teen Services at Norway Memorial Library has three summer programs lined up for teens.

A week of art will run from Monday to Friday, June 21 to 25, for teens interested in designing and painting a mural on walls in the new Teen Room. Jess Person, Boxberry School art teacher, will assist teens in brainstorming ideas and teach them how to develop the concept and then paint the walls. The program will run from 10 a.m. to noon at the library. Space is limited and preregistration is required.

Summer reading will begin on Tuesday, June 22, with the start of a book blog for teens in grades seven to 12, and middle and high school teachers who want to read books and discuss them on line.

The books include a list of 26 books nominated by teens nationwide in a program sponsored by the Young Adult Library Services, a part of the American Library Association. The library has put a majority of the nominated books on hold for the program. Teens and teachers will set up an account and receive a password in order to access the blog.

The reading program will run through Aug. 10 and participants are expected to read a minimum of five books from the list. In addition to posting comments, participants will have the opportunity to vote along with teens across the country for their top 10 picks in August and September. The library will host a pizza party for the local bloggers on Aug. 11.

The third summer program is Teen Trail Walks, set up to offer teens a summer for healthy choices by walking trails in Norway from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesdays, June 29 through Aug. 10. Each week, rain or shine, teens will set out from the library, walking different trails for one hour before returning to the library to prepare healthy snacks.

During the walks, participants will visit a community garden, learn about growing local food and about volunteer opportunities for building trails and preparing community dinners. Adult staff will accompany teens on each walk.

Registration for the summer reading program and the walking program will take place from noon to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday, June 17 and 18, and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 19.

All programs are open to teens in grades seven to 12. For more information, call the Norway Memorial Library at 743-5309 or e-mail [email protected].
