100 years ago, 1910

A woman from Lewiston was found Wednesday night by the police at Portland in a place known as “Tramps’ Retreat.” She gave her age at 26 and told the officers that she went to Portland with a man to get married, riding on a freight train. The man was not found, however. The woman was turned over to the police matron to be returned to Lewiston.

50 years ago, 1960

Warm, sunny weather yesterday resulted in a record registration of youngsters for an opening day at Lewiston city playgrounds.

Recreation Department Director Nathaniel J. Crowley reported a first day sign-up of 1,943 youths at the 10 playground areas throughout the city.

The excellent weather drew a tremendous turnout at the city park playground and pool. Crowley’s staff at one time counted 285 youths in the pool and another 225 in the immediate vicinity.

25 years ago 1985

Juries in Androscoggin County Superior Court may have a little easier time picturing bone injuries described in civil lawsuits from now on, thanks to a retired Lewiston physician who donated an X-ray viewbox to the court last week.

Dr. Philip Archambault, who was called Tuesday as a witness in a civil negligence trial brought by a woman who suffered an injured ankle in a fall almost five years ago, donated the viewbox to the Androscoggin County Bar Association for its use in court.
