SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Former candidates for Maine’s Democratic gubernatorial nomination are getting behind party nominee Libby Mitchell.

The former candidates got on stage with Mitchell Wednesday in South Portland to show support for her.

The unity event came hours after the losing Maine Republican candidates from last week’s primary turned out for a unity event for gubernatorial nominee Paul LePage in Waterville.

Those events and others show that the campaign for governor and Maine legislative seats is moving into gear barely a week after the primaries.

On Tuesday night, author Stephen King pledged his support for Mitchell as he attended a Democratic Party fundraiser in Boston.

Three independents have also earned spots on the November ballot.
