FREEPORT — Wilma A. Hatch, 91, of West Poland, died peacefully Tuesday, June 15 surrounded by family.
She was born in Dexter, daughter of Willis Burleigh Ayer and Mary Patterson Ayer. She attended Dexter schools and graduated from N.H. Fay High School in 1935. She married Norman Shattuck Hatch of Dexter.
She attended nursing school at Central Maine Medical School and St. Joseph’s School of Nursing. Her love of nursing was guided by her desire to provide love and comfort to others. Her career included nursing at Augusta General Hospital, Plummer Memorial Hospital, Eastern Maine Medical Center and Dexter nursing home.
She was a Past Matron of Wassookeag Chapter No. 44 and Past Mother Advisor of Dexter Rainbow for Girls. She loved to sing and was a former member of Shiretown Singers, Dexter Community Chorus and also sang solo at several community churches. Her musical talent also included the violin. She was a member of the chamber music group in Augusta.
She was a former member of Poland Community Church and served in many roles, always looking for a way to bring people together.
She loved any activity that involved her family. She was a lifelong learner, always seeking new knowledge and experiences. She will always be remembered for Nana’s cookies, her love of children, animals, creating things with her hands, traveling, her love of the smell and sound of the ocean, crossword puzzles, reading and working in the garden.
She is survived by two daughters, Shaddon Ross of Taos, New Mexico and Daphne Grant and her husband, Ken, of West Poland; one niece, Debbie Patterson of Bath; and her six beloved grandchildren, Kim Harter, Jeff Harter, Chris Harter, Bryn Cuizon, Amanda Grant Roys and Sarah Patterson Gray; great-grandchild, Neil Diego Harter; and great-niece, Bethanne Moody and her husband, Tim; as well as great-great-niece, baby Bailey.
She was predeceased by her husband, Norman Hatch; and her sister, Roberta Smith.
The family is especially appreciative of the loving care and support Wilma received from the staff of Cumberland Unit, at Hawthorne House, in Freeport. Their compassion and respect for Wilma and her family will always be remembered.
