The University of Maine at Farmington is expected to name Jay baseball and girls’ basketball coach Chris Bessey its new baseball coach Monday.

Bessey, a 1993 UMF graduate who was inducted into the university’s athletic hall of fame this spring, succeeds Dick Meader, who had coached the team since 1993. The school recently implemented an organization restructuring that separated the responsibilities for coaching baseball and men’s basketball, which Meader continues to coach.

Reached by phone Saturday, Bessey declined comment, saying his contract with the university still needs to be finalized. UMF director of athletics, fitness and recreation Julie Davis did not return phone and e-mail messages seeking comment. The school was expected to issue a press release announcing the hiring on Monday.

Bessey posted a message on his Facebook page Thursday that read “Accepted the Head Baseball Job at the University of Maine at Farmington today!!”

“Thanks everyone, it will be exciting!!” read another post.

Last season, the Beavers struggled to a 5-22 record and 3-13, last place in the North Eastern Athletic Conference East Division. Over the five previous seasons, they accumulated a 35-102 record.

UMF graduated seven seniors from its roster this year. Just three of them started more than half of their games, including two pitchers who combined for 13 starts in 2010. Fourteen of the 25 players on the roster last year were sophomores or freshmen.

Bessey guided Jay to back-to-back Western Class C baseball titles in 2002 and 2003, winning the school’s first state championship in 2002. Dwindling enrollment and turnout for the team eroded the program in recent years, and the Tigers missed the playoffs with a 6-9 record this year.

His coaching resume also includes stints as girls’ and boys’ basketball coach at Jay and Livermore Falls. In 2009, he led the Jay girls to their first state championship. His status as the Tigers’ basketball coach remained unclear Saturday.
