There is a big, dog-poop problem on the corner of Summer and Whipple streets in Lewiston. Daily, there was a large dog whose owner allowed it to make a mess on the lawns of other neighbors. These neighbors put up signs demanding that dog owners refrain from allowing their dogs to poop on their lawns.
Now, this dog owner is allowing the dog to do its job on the opposite corner, near an empty lot, or on the grassy strips between the sidewalks and street. The owner never cleans up afterward.
Dogs are attracted to the droppings of other dogs and try to eat it, which can spread disease. Children play near where this mess is being left and not cleaned up. It is an unsanitary menace.
Lewiston’s City Ordinance 14-41 states, “With regard to dogs on public or private property, other than the owner’s, the owner shall be responsible for the immediate removal of excrement.”
Regardless of the code, it is just plain inconsiderate. If people won’t clean up their dogs’ waste, let them poop on their own lawns.
This has become a problem in other parts of our neighborhood. Neighbors need to start watching out and report dog owners who leave their dogs’ messes for others to deal with.
I encourage others who see someone do it, say something to the owner. Or, if not comfortable saying something directly, report it.
For those who own a dog — grab a bag and pick up your dogs’ poop.
