JAY — A Saturday night fire on Intervale Road in Jay left an uninsured family homeless after the blaze tore through their mobile home.
Deputy Fire Chief Jim Shink said the fire started about 8:20 p.m. in the master bedroom of a mobile home owned by Robert Burnell Jr. Shink said that Burnell used a fire extinguisher to try and put out the blaze, but was only successful in giving his family enough time to escape the mobile home.
“The fire extinguisher worked, but not well enough. It gave them just enough time to get out,” Shink said.
Shink said that the blaze — which completely gutted the 12- by 72-foot trailer and its addition — resulted from an overloaded power strip. The cause of the fire was determined by the state Fire Marshal’s Office following an investigation Saturday night.
Shink said that the mobile home is considered a total loss, but did not have an estimate on damages. Firefighters from Livermore, Livermore Falls and Wilton assisted Jay firefighters in battling the blaze. Shink said that emergency crews cleared the scene about 11:30 p.m.
