WINTHROP – The Winthrop Red Sox trio of Dennis McHugh, Nate Stubbert and Matthew Richardson combined on a five-hit shutout of the Jay Orioles, 6-0, in Pine Tree League senior baseball.
McHugh picked up the win, allowing three hits while striking out five. Brett Witherell drove in Matt McCarthy in the bottom of the first inning to give the Red Sox (7-0) the lead.
Mike House led the offensive attack against Jay’s Chris Bessey with three of Winthrop’s 15 hits in the game, including a double and two RBIs. Other repeat hitters for the Sox were Witherell, Dave Ricker Jr., Sam Shain and John Bourque.
Zach Keene provided a pair of singles for Jay (2-4). The Orioles host West Paris on Wednesday at Jay High School, while the Red Sox travel to Boothbay Harbor on Friday night to take on the Downeast Dodgers under the lights.
