OTISFIELD — The Otisfield Historical Society will meet on Thursday, June 24, to take a look at Otisfield’s villages. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at the Otisfield Town Office and will feature a panel discussion with visual aid provided by maps and photographs of the villages.
During the 19th century, the population of Otisfield, like that of many Maine towns, tended to center around several named, some of which have now lost their identity and exist mainly as names on old maps. The evening’s discussion will focus on several of the more important of these villages.
A panel of experts will explain how each one developed and identify distinguishing characteristics. Anita Jaakkola Washburn, who grew up on Bell Hill, will first talk about the villages of Bell Hill and Rayville. Henry Hamilton will explain why Spurr’s Corner developed. Jean Hankins will discuss the naming and history of the Gore section of town. Polly Bartow will discuss Pugleyville, now known as East Otisfield. Pat Burkard, longtime resident of Bolster’s Mills, will summarize the significance of that village. Finally, Callie Zilinsky will explore two parts of town that are less well known, Jugtown and Oak Hill.
The public is welcome to attend. Refreshments will be served following the meeting.
