He was born May 17, 1922, in Old Greenwich, Conn. He wrote the following about his life: “I’ve had an exciting, fulfilling life. A great childhood, a good education and service with the Marine Corps in the Pacific during World War II. I was married to my first wife during World War II and had a son. My second marriage, to Florence Bartko, lasted 46 wonderful years and produced three children. We lived in New York, Maryland, Los Angeles, Houston, Philadelphia, Bangkok, Thailand, Tehran, Iran, Bowdoinham and now Lisbon. I send heartfelt thanks to all who made my life wonderful.”
