The recent vote on Question 1, regarding tax reform, has led to implications that Mainers do not want tax reform. Reform, according to my dictionary, means to “amend or improve by change of form or removal of faults or abuses.”
Legislators who backed the tax reform that was repealed had stated that the new tax structure would be revenue neutral — no increase or decrease in overall tax collections; that the shift would be for out-of-state visitors here. They believed instead of one tax item, it would be better to tax 100 items; after all, other states tax more items than Maine.
Other states also do a better job at reform.
The issue reminds me of an old song: “100 ways to leave your lover.”
Don’t you just love the Maine taxpayers?
Maybe Maine can now lead in tax reform and not follow what other states do in taxing their residents.
