RUMFORD — Shandi Averill, a nurse in Rumford Hospital’s Special Delivery Birthing Center, has just been awarded certification in inpatient obstetric nursing by the National Certification Corporation for the obstetric, gynecologic and neonatal nursing specialties.

To be certified, a registered nurse must have at least two years of obstetric specialty nursing experience with a minimum of 2,000 hours worked in that specialty and successfully pass a stringent written examination.

Averill is a 2004 graduate of the Central Maine Medical Center School of Nursing and Health Professions. She has been a Rumford Hospital nurse for four and a half years, all of that time in the Birthing Center. She successfully completed the Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics in 2008 and was the recipient of a hospital GEMS award, also in that year.

Averill lives in Dixfield with her husband and three children.
