LEWISTON — Broad Street Band will perform from 8:30 p.m. to midnight on Friday, June 25, at Little Dan’s BBQ on Main Street. This Lewiston-based classic rock dance band has invited well-known drummer and motivational speaker Dan Caro to join them.
Caro was born in Metairie, La., in 1979. At age 2, he sustained third-degree burns over 70 percent of his body. The fire occurred when gas fumes in the family garage ignited the pilot flame of a water heater. He was treated at the Shriner’s Burns Hospital in Boston and underwent many reconstructive surgeries throughout his childhood.
Ultimately, as a result of the burn injuries, Caro lost his right hand, most of his left hand and is severely scarred. In the mid 1980s, reconstructive surgery gave him the use of a moveable thumb on his left hand.
Despite his physical challenges, Caro began drumming at age 12. He plays by using his left thumb to grip one drum stick, and he attaches the other drum stick to his right wrist with a wristband and rubber bands.
Caro is a respected drummer in the New Orleans music circuit. His personal style, musical talents and courage have landed him countless gigs with some of the world’s greatest performers such as Ashish Khan, Michael Ray, Walter “Wolfman” Washington, Karl Denson, Marshall Allen and Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey.
Besides music, Caro is an ambassador for the Shriners of North America. He is a motivational speaker who shares stories of physical challenges, personal achievement and bravery. This is the second time Broad Street Band members have shared the stage with their friend.
This performance, appropriate for all ages, is open to the public at no charge. For more information about the show, e-mail Celeste Onofrio at [email protected].
