RANGELEY — Concert organist Robert Ludwig will perform a “Stars and Stripes” patriotic concert Sunday, July 4, on the grand church organ at the Church of the Good Shepherd.

Music selections will include music from Handel’s “Fireworks Music,” British composer Robert Chilcott’s “Sun Dance, and Bach’s “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring” and “Wo Gott der Herr nich bey uns halt,” a piece that dates from 1705-1710 but was only discovered in March of 2008.

Ludwig will also be joined by the Rev. Jud Pealer in a rare solo organ and narrated performance of Aaron Copland’s “Lincoln Portrait.” The concert will conclude with John Philip Sousa’s “The Stars and Stripes Forever,” followed by a patriotic singalong.

Also a conductor, teacher and church musician, Ludwig has performed throughout the United States, Canada and England. He holds degrees from Davidson College and Yale University, and served as choirmaster and organist for Christ Church Cathedral in Lexington, Ky., and Cathedral of the Incarnation, Garden City, N.Y.

Robert and Nancy Ludwig together have performed the complete organ works of Cesar Franck and J.S. Bach. Though he has lived in the New York area for the past 25 years, Ludwig has been a frequent year-round visitor to the Rangeley area for 35 years.

The concert will begin at 7 p.m. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted to benefit the church’s outreach and music programs.
