The previous week, the members put out flags at the area cemeteries to mark the graves of veterans and deceased members of the Daughters of Union Veterans.

Following the church service, the members traveled to West Stoneham where they held graveside services honoring Sgt. William Warren Durgin, who escorted the remains of President Abraham Lincoln to his resting place in Springfield, Ill.

The members were also invited to do a memorial program for the Oxford Historical Society at their monthly meeting on May 28th, held at the Kaye House Museum in Oxford. Names were read of the men from Oxford who went to the Civil War. When a soldier’s name was read who didn’t return, a flower was placed in a vase in memory. There was a flag salute, followed by poems, readings and prayers. The group’s senior vice president, Gail Butterfield, joined them in Oxford.
