100 years ago, 1910

Lewiston’s amateurs, those who have entertained crowded houses at the Empire on several Friday nights, waited a long time outside the theater yesterday for Manager Hamburg. It is said that Hamburg promised to take many of the amateurs to New York where he told them that he could get them good jobs. Instead, he is said to have taken the train from Auburn and that the amateurs are not only disappointed on their proposed trip but are also minus their pay for the last amateur performance.

50 years ago, 1960

Luiggi’s Pizzeria, a well- known Lewiston eating place, has started an expansion and remodeling project.

Work began last week and probably will be completed by September, owner Louis Talarico reported last night.

The remodeling project will find only one street level floor, instead of the two floors now being used.

The kitchen will be moved to the Sabattus Street side of the building, and the new dining room will run the entire length of the Horton Street side.

25 years ago 1985

Dr Gilbert R. Grimes, a Lewiston pediatrician, has been elected to succeed Lewiston surgeon Dr. Louis Fishman as president of the Central Maine Medical Center medical staff.

Grimes is a member of  the American Medical Association, Maine Medical Association, Androscoggin County Medical Association and the New England Pediatric Society.
