When the going gets tough, the tough … well, they hit the sack or watch TV.

That’s the finding of a Labor Department report that says unemployed people generally spent their new-found free time getting more sleep or watching TV.

Which, as unfortunate as it sounds, probably makes sense. No job means no income, which severely limits your ability and desire to do more interesting or fulfilling things.

No job equals no gym membership which equals less time exercising. You can’t very well travel, go to baseball games or movies. All too expensive.

So, you do what’s cheap, and there’s nothing cheaper than sleeping.

The even sadder irony here is that the people with jobs are working longer and harder than ever to make up for their lost colleagues.

Which means, no doubt, that by the time they get home from work they are also too tired to do anything except sleep and watch TV.

It’s a vicious cycle.
