SOUTH PARIS — Leonas F. Holt has been named the Veteran of the Month at the Maine Veterans’ Home.
Holt was born in Millettville, a neighborhood in Norway, Maine, on Sept. 17, 1919. He graduated from Norway High School in 1937 and enlisted in the Army Air Force on Aug. 7, 1942. He became a corporal and served at Lowry Air Force Base, Colo., as a machine gun instructor. He was honorably discharged on Aug. 21, 1943.
Upon his discharge, Holt returned to Maine. He was a woodsman, a carpenter and a farmer. He loved working in the woods year-round and worked for Lee Cole for many years. As a carpenter, he worked for Henry’s Builders. Holt had married his sweetheart, Fay, on June 21, 1942, and together they raised a daughter and two sons in Greenwood City, Maine.
They lived on a farm and Holt loved working with the animals, haying and gardening. The couple has four grandchildren and were married for nearly 67 years.
Holt came to the Maine Veterans’ Home in June of 2009. He has a great sense of humor and loves to joke with the staff and his family. He resides on the C-Unit.
