Recently, I have seen a number of articles and editorials online and in print concerning excessive motorcycle noise. Having read arguments from both sides of the issue, I find the case presented by motorcyclists to be weak and unpersuasive.

The “strongest” argument seems to be that a loud exhaust is somehow a safety device, making other drivers aware of the rider. Is anyone buying that?

The exhausts in question are those that are, in fact, illegal. If some motorcyclists feel it is necessary to break the law in order to assure their personal safety, perhaps they are unsuited to this activity, with its obvious risks and dangers.
