RUMFORD — Rumford Public Library’s 34th annual summer fest program is ready to begin. Ginny Todd, children’s librarian, invites area children and their friends to take part in the activities that will be offered during the four-week schedule of daily events, which will begin on Tuesday, July 6, and continue through Friday, July 30.
The program is free and will feature special guests who will bring an hour of fun-filled activity. Programs will include magic, crafts, singing, Picnic in the Park story times, theatrical productions and a pet show. Several of the daily activities complement this year’s summer reading program “Make a Splash…Read” theme.
Each Friday will feature the noontime Picnic in the Park, when children will bring their lunches on the back lawn of the library while listening to the day’s storyteller. In the event of inclement weather, picnics will be moved into the library’s public room.
Unless otherwise noted, all other summer fest programs will be at 3 p.m. and last approximately one hour. Parents and other caregivers are welcome at all the programs.
The first week of summer fest will begin on Tuesday, July 6, with a visit from Doug Maifeld of the Rumford Police Department. The theme of Maifeld’s visit will be “Let’s All Be Safe This Summer” and children might even get a chance to check out the inside of his police cruiser.
Wednesday, July 7, will be Stuffed Animal Extravaganza Day, when children are invited to bring along their favorite one for a show-and-tell. On Thursday, July, 8 the library will welcome magician Conjuring Carroll. Carroll Chapman, of Embden, has been entertaining since he was 16 and established his own magic business in 1998. His magic will have a reading and beach theme.
The first Picnic in the Park will be held at noon Friday, July 9, with East Auburn Elementary School kindergarten teacher Jessica Carrier as the guest storyteller. Carrier’s story time theme will be “Bubbles.”
The summer reading program, “Make a Splash…Read,” is offered as part of the fest to encourage reading for enjoyment and to help enhance children’s reading skills and vocabulary during the school vacation.
The program is designed not only for children who are independent readers, but also for pre-readers and emerging reader.. The program, which began June 27, will continue through Saturday, July 24. Children can join at any time.
