RANGELEY — Twenty-four hundred people temporarily lost the service to call outside their calling zone in the Rangeley area Wednesday morning, FairPoint Communications spokesman Jeff Nevins said.
The company believes a tree fell on a utility line and that line hit a FairPoint fiber optic cable burning the cable and severing it, Nevins said.
That left the FairPoint customers with the 864 Rangeley exchange number unable to call outside their local calling area in state and unable to call out of state, Nevins said.
They were able to call within their zone and the 911 emergency number, he said.
The intrastate and interstate service was out from 8:55 a.m. to 4:17 p.m., he said.
Crews worked to re-splice the cable throughout the day, he said.
