DEAR SUN SPOTS: I would like to know, when your car registration is due, how long do you have to register your car? I met a person on May 31 whose registration was due in March. I reminded them. All they said was that they’d look into it. Today on my way home the car in front of me was due in April. What is the matter with the police department? Don’t they pay attention or can you register your car whenever you feel like it? — No Name, Auburn

ANSWER: While Sun Spots agrees that people should register their vehicles promptly, it is easy to forget. Sun Spots has forgotten herself. In March, the transfer station attendant noticed that Sun Spots’ registration was due the previous August. Of course, this oversight was completely unintentional.

Other people may intentionally delay, but it does not get them anything. Even if they pay six months late, they still have to pay for the entire year. For example, when Sun Spots went in March to pay, she had to pay the full year as if it was the previous August, and then that August she had to pay for another full year.

People used to be able to take advantage of the system, which allowed them to reregister their vehicle for the new month. By delaying for a month or two each year for a few years, they could save a whole year’s worth of fees. The Legislature changed the rules to prevent this abuse.

If the persons you saw are unaware of this change, they will learn of it when they finally get around to renewing their vehicle registration.
