University of Southern Maine graduate Christian Robert Small has received his Doctor of Medicine from the John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii.

Small, a 1996 graduate of Edward Little High School, also received the medical school’s Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award, given to that student who demonstrates “exemplary compassion, competence and respect in the delivery of care.”

Small received his Bachelor of Arts in biotechnology from the University of Southern Maine in 2000. He joined the Peace Corps and served three years, teaching science in the South Pacific. Small has chosen his residency at the University of California Medical Center, San Diego, where he will complete a combined program in family medicine and psychiatry.

He is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Robert Small of Mechanic Falls.
