TEMPLE — Koviashuvik Day will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 10. Free tours of the school will be offered at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Founded in Temple in 2008, the small school teaches practical and inexpensive ways for people to live with and use their local land. Tours will include a stone root cellar, an earth-bermed greenhouse, rainwater collection systems, a log cabin, solar and wood stove hot water systems, alternative cooking technologies, vegetable gardens and fruit and nut plantings. Throughout the day there will be ongoing hide tanning demonstrations.

Other events during July will include a “Deer Skins into Leather” workshop from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 11. Participants will learn, through doing, about all the steps and stages that transform a raw hide into soft, fuzzy, smoked buckskin. Participants will depart with their own raw deer skin and the skills to tan it. Cost is $55.

Also, a “Pack Basket Weekend” will be held Saturday and Sunday, July 31 and Aug. 1. Cost is $245. A brown ash pack basket will carry a load for many years. During the weekend, participants will weave a full-sized basket as well as learn how to pound ash to prepare basket materials in the future. Participants leave with their own pack basket.

Parking is available near the school sign on Lake Drive, which can be reached by turning onto Staples Pond Road, which becomes Lake Drive. It is a 10-minute walk from the parking area to the school center. For more information or to register for classes, contact Chris or Ashirah Knapp at 778-0318.
