WEST PARIS — Rev. Richard Rhys Williams of Otisfield died Monday, July 5, at Ledgeview Living Center.
He was born April 21, 1923, in Bethlehem, Pa., and graduated from Lehigh University, received his bachelor’s degree in theology from the General Theological Seminary, his master’s degree in Semitic languages from Columbia University and his doctorate of theology from the General Theological Seminary.
He was ordained to the priesthood in 1947, and served as a curate at the Church of the Holy Spirit in Lake Forest, Ill., and subsequently as an assistant at St. Mark’s New Canaan, Conn., for a number of years.
In the 1950s, he became rector of St. Mary’s and St. Jude’s Churches in Northeast Harbor and Seal Harbor. He taught briefly at Nashotah House, Nashotah, Wis., and later became rector of Christ Church, Poughkeepsie, N.Y. During this period he did some teaching in the department of religion at Marist College, Poughkeepsie. Subsequently, he taught full time at Marist College while holding the position of rector at St. Peter’s Church, Lithgow N.Y.
Upon retirement, he and his wife moved to Cape Breton, N.S., where he taught for a number of years at the University College of Cape Breton (now named Cape Breton University). He also assisted when needed in the various Anglican churches in Cape Breton.
In 2002, Rhys and Pixie retired again and moved to Otisfield, where he occasionally assisted at Christ Episcopal Church, Norway.
He is survived by his wife, Mary (Pixie); four children, Michael Montgomery-Williams of Andover, Mass., Margaret Williams of South Portland, Trudy Sloan of Kennebunk and Jane Lattimore of Princeton, Mass.; and five grandchildren.
