AUGUSTA — Frederick E. Mitchell, 78, of Main Street, Readfield, died Tuesday, July 6, at the Maine Veterans’ Home.

He was born in Paget, Bermuda, Jan. 17, 1932, the son of Frederick and Mildred (Wheeler) Mitchell. Frederick graduated from Brunswick High School in 1950, where he was a member of the swim team. He later served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Fred had worked at First National Grocery stores for 23 years and another 20 years for Shaw’s, retiring in August 1995.

Frederick had a passion for airplanes. He enjoyed making model airplanes and attending air shows. He had the ability and knowledge to identify the type of airplane by just listening to its engines. He was also a self-taught woodworker. He cleared the land and built the home they currently live in.

Fred enjoyed hunting, fishing and dancing. He was a 30-year member of the Squire Town Squares and was an excellent story teller.

He is survived by his wife, Georgette Mitchell of Readfield; a son, Scott P. Mitchell of Bellrose, N.Y.; a daughter, Lynn Marie Mosher and her husband, John, of Castine; three grandchildren, Janine Mosher, Erin Mosher and Julijana Mitchell; also several nieces, nephews and cousins.
