BROWNFIELD — Police arrested a Brownfield man accused of shooting a neighbor Saturday night after the suspect hid in the woods behind his house for almost five hours.

Maine State Police arrested Keith Brain of Moore Road at about 8:50 p.m. as he emerged from the woods, Oxford County Sheriff Wayne Gallant said.

Brain is accused of shooting James Walsh, 38, of 138 Moore Road.

Oxford County dispatch received a call at 4:21 p.m. saying that Walsh had been shot. Police responded to find Walsh with gunshot wounds in an arm and a leg and a suspect fleeing into the woods.

Maine State Police tactical and K-9 units were called in as Walsh was taken to Bridgton Hospital. Officials at Bridgton Hospital would not confirm that Walsh was there.

“The tactical team was set up in a wooded area and the suspect just walked out of the woods and on a trail in the direction of the state police,” Gallant said. “They took him into custody, brought him out and turned him over to one of my detectives.”

Brain is being charged with elevated aggravated assault. He was taken to Oxford County Jail, and is expected to be arraigned early next week.

Gallant did not know the motive for the shooting, he said.

“They were neighbors and the victim appeared to be having some sort of domestic issues,” Gallant said. “We’re not sure if an argument ensued or what happened, but those are answers we’ll continue working on later tonight.”
