I am writing in response to an editorial, printed July 3, that mentioned American flags on veterans’ graves.
The piece alluded to the desire of some cemeteries to remove flags to mow grass. Title 13RMS, section 1101, states that veterans’ graves will be marked with a marker and American flag from May 1 to Sept. 30, with no mention of mowing grass. Title 38 USC states how to place the flag.
If there is no organization willing to place the flags, the city or town which the cemetery is in has the responsibility of not only buying the flags and markers, but also of placing and removing the flags.
Cemeteries such as St. Peter’s, that limit the amount of time flags can be flown, are in violation of the law, and veterans’ organizations that allow that to go on are not doing their job.
The public needs to have a better understanding of veterans. Since the end of the draft, the public has become detached from the military.
