AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — The National Organization for Marriage is kicking off a “One Man, One Woman” bus tour in Maine, where residents overturned a gay marriage law.
NOM President Brian Brown says it’s important to start the 19-state tour in a place where people “voted to protect marriage.” Gay marriage supporters, meanwhile, are holding a press conference nearby at the State House on Wednesday to show they’re continuing their efforts to educate and press for same-sex marriage.
NOM donated nearly $2 million to Stand for Marriage Maine, the political group that led the fight to repeal the gay marriage law. Now it’s in a legal fight as it tries to avoid releasing its donor list. NOM contends it’s a national organization that’s not subject to Maine’s campaign finance laws.
