Spot, the beloved mascot of the Auburn Fire Department, died this week of a disease known as apthus fever and is now buried beside Joe, the big black horse behind which he had ridden to so many fires. No matter at what speed the hose truck was going, Spot was usually to be seen perched on the hose in the body of the wagon, his tongue hanging out and his eyes bulging with excitement, and when the fire was reached, he was the first of the department at the actual scene of the blaze. He will be sadly missed by the whole department.

MECHANIC FALLS — If the Auburn Fire Department’s Aerial One is formally certified as a result of last week’s inspection, it will be accepted by the town of Mechanic Falls.

The Town Council voted recently to accept the truck if it passes the inspection.

Under the terms of the pending agreement between Mechanic Falls and Auburn, the lease cost would be $1, with the provision that the truck will be returned to Auburn if in the future it has need to permanently have the vehicle.
