ROCKLAND, Maine (AP) — A Maine State Prison inmate who’s seeking a new trial for the 1988 kidnapping and killing of a 12-year-old girl is facing new charges.
Dennis Dechaine has been indicted on charges of possessing the painkiller morphine and anti-anxiety drug klonopin on April 5, the day he was rushed to the hospital from the Warren prison. He spent two weeks at the Maine Medical Center, but the nature of his medical problems were never disclosed.
Knox County District Attorney Jeffrey Rushlau said Friday that trafficking prison contraband carries a five-year prison sentence.
Dechaine’s attorneys are pressing for a new trial based on DNA evidence. He’s already served more than 20 years for the murder of Sarah Cherry of Bowdoin.
