AUBURN – Eugene “Gene” Roy, 83, a resident of Western Avenue, Jay, died peacefully early Sunday morning, July 18, at Hospice House of Androscoggin in Auburn.

He was born July 13, 1927, in Jay, the son of Alphonse and Alphonsine (St.Pierre) Roy. He was a graduate of Jay High School. He served in the U.S. Merchant Marines. On June 11, 1946, at St. Theresa’s Church in Mexico, he married Theresa Deroches, they made their home and raised their four daughters in Jay. Theresa passed away on April 14, 2002. Gene worked for International Paper Co., at both the Otis and the Androscoggin Mills in Jay. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He absolutely loved the Red Sox and enjoyed the Celtics, playing golf and cribbage. Gene was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Church in Jay, a member of the Frank L. Mitchell V.F.W. Post 3335 in Jay, Knights of Columbus and the International Paper Quarter Century Club.

He is survived by his daughters and their husbands, Angela and Doug Smith of Jay, Alexis “Lucky” and Michael D’Ascanio of Casco and Terri and Bill Hartley of Kittery; his son-in-law, Mark Bayer of Jay; 10 grandchildren, Jason Bayer, Rebecca Clough, Stacy Tufts, Andrea and Matthew Smith, Nicholas and Lauren D’Ascanio and Alexander, Emily and Delia Hartley; four great-grandchildren, Trevor Tufts, Summer and Violet Clough and Thomas Smith; his brothers, Bernard Roy of Livermore and Dennis Pineau of Portland.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Jacqueline Bayer on June 24, 2010.
