FARMINGTON — A local man, who police say was visibly intoxicated, faces charges after he tried to get into two resident halls early Sunday at the University of Maine at Farmington, UMF Police Chief Ted Blais said Monday.

John G. Michaud, 22, of Farmington was arrested on misdemeanor charges of criminal trespass and disorderly conduct, he said.

UMF officer Ernest Steward III was called in after Maine Jazz Camp staff reported that a man climbed through a window at about 1 a.m. at Mallett Hall, at the corner of Lincoln and High streets, he said.

Michaud had tried the door and it was locked — a key pass is required to get in, he said.

He then popped off a screen and climbed through an open window, Blais said.

Camp staff were right there and stopped him and Michaud took off running, he said.

Steward responded and found Michaud trying to gain entry into a side door of Purington Hall, which is adjacent to Mallett Hall, on the corner of Perkins and High streets, Blais said.

Maine Jazz Camp is held annually at UMF and those attending stay at Mallett Hall. There was no one staying at Perkins Hall, Blais said.

It was his understanding, Blais said, that Michaud told police that he was looking for socialization.

Michaud was a student at the university during the 2009-10 year but he didn’t know if he was a current student, Blais said.
