BRUNSWICK — The Grammy-nominated a cappella quintet Toxic Audio will return to Maine State Music Theatre Monday, July 26, to perform its repertoire of new sounds and old favorites.
In 1998, Toxic Audio launched its quirky show in an abandoned storefront at the Orlando International Fringe Festival. To its amazement, people began cramming into that storefront to hear them. The show caught the attention of Disney executives who hired them as featured performers at Disney/MGM Studios. Soon after, the group was crowned champion at the National Harmony Sweepstakes in California.
In 2003, Toxic Audio’s album, “Chemistry” was named Album of the Year by the Contemporary A Cappella Society of America. The ensemble also won the 2004 Drama Desk Award for Unique Theatrical Experience for its Off-Broadway Show in New York’s John Houseman Theatre.
Toxic Audio is known nationwide for its rich harmonies, vocal texturing and repertoire ranging from rap to be-bop and scat to doo-wop.
The phonic five will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. at Pickard Theater on the Bowdoin College campus. Tickets, ranging from $17 to $30, may be purchased by calling 725-8769 or visiting www.msmt.org.
