NEW SHARON — Selectmen were able to hold the tax rate at $12.50 per $1,000 of property valuation for 2010, Board of Selectmen Chairman Maynard Webster said Monday.

The rate represents spending nearly $40,000 less this year on town government operations than last year, and using $40,000 from the town’s surplus account to offset the rate, he said.

People who qualify for the Homestead Exemption program will see a little increase in their tax bills due to the state lowering the exemption from $13,000 to $10,000, he said.

Tax bills will be mailed out on Monday, July 26, and are due on Dec. 1.

However, if taxpayers want to receive a 5 percent discount on their taxes, they would need to pay them within 30 days of the bill, Webster said.
