Retired science teacher, Bitsy Ionta, fascinates some of the children at Ludden Memorial Library Tuesday afternoon as he makes coins float on top of a plate of water. It’s all in the surface tension, he explained. That was but one experiment he performed for the youngsters who are taking part in the library’s annual reading program. This year, the theme is, “Make a Splash — Read!” All events during the month-long program are related to water. Librarian Peggy Malley said people from Chewonki spoke about vernal polls, and arts and crafts day involved making sailboats. The final program is set for Tuesday, July 27, when Conjuring Carroll will perform some magic tricks and children will receive awards for their reading progress.
